Name/History
The acronym “XCR” stands for eXchangeable Caliber Rifle or eXtremely Cool Rifle. You can choose as both descriptions apply.
The XCR is a truly Modular Weapon System in the category of firearms that are commonly referred to as Black Rifles, Tactical Rifles, and some try to vilify them by referring to them as Assault Rifles. Here we’ll just refer to them as Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs).
The most common MSR in the US is undoubtedly the AR-15 and its full auto siblings the M-16 and M4 Carbine (hereinafter collectively referred to as AR-15s). There are thousands of different makes and variations of the AR-15. At first glance, the XCR looks a little like the AR-15, but the XCR is not an AR-15. It’s much more. The reason it looks a little like the AR-15 is that it uses AR-15 magazines, and pistol grips, and has an accessory rail system similar to those found on AR-15s.
The XCR is the result of the desire of the US Special Forces to have a weapon system that was more reliable and durable than the AR-15/M16, that had better ergonomics, and that could shoot a variety of ammunition including that of the enemy. The Special Forces did not get this weapon but Robinson Armament built it anyway.
Ergonomics
The XCR’s patented placement of manual controls is the best. Whether right or left-handed, one can perform all manual functions comfortably while keeping his eyes on the sights and the target. Those who have purchased XCRs like the ergonomics so much that they often sell their other MSRs and proclaim their XCRs as their “Go to Guns”.
Reliability and Durability
What makes a weapon reliable? A semi or fully-automatic weapon is reliable if it feeds, fires, extracts, ejects, and reloads reliably. Reliability is a result of good design. The XCR is more reliable than the AR15 and other firearms based on the AR-15 (Stoner) operating system with its small multi-lugged bolt, weak extractor, and ejector. The XCR adopted design ideas from the more reliable AK-47 (Kalashnikov) operating system which has a better feeding angle, a stronger bolt, and extractor, a solid ejector, and is piston-driven. The XCR eats almost any ammo reliably including steel-cased ammo.
Recoil Mitigation
The XCR is a pleasure to shoot. Its nearly frictionless operating system combined with an adjustable gas system, mitigates recoil so follow-up shots are easy. For any given ammo, the XCR can be adjusted to minimize recoil and maintain reliability.
Caliber Changes
The XCR is truly multi-caliber because of its patented quick-change barrel system. The XCR-L and XCR-M both shoot a variety of popular calibers. The XCR-L can fire .223/5.56, .300 BLK, 7.62×39, 6.8 SPC, 6.5 Grendel, and 6mm ARC. The XCR-M can fire .308/7.62 NATO, 6.5 Creedmoor, .260 REM, and .243 WIN.
For some calibers, it’s just a quick barrel change. For others, one must change the bolt, firing pin, and magazine also. Either way, it only takes minutes, and if the sights are set for a certain barrel and that barrel is removed and replaced, it will shoot in the same spot.
Materials
The XCR is made from only the best materials. All the structural parts of the XCR such as the lower receiver, upper receiver, and buttstock parts are made from metal. The only plastic parts are the pistol grip, butt pad, and cheek rest. The XCR is made to last and last.
Accessories
The XCR has a monolithic upper receiver made from a single piece of aircraft aluminum. The 1913 Std (Picatinny) Rail on top and the M-LOK rail system on the sides and bottom are machined parallel with the trunion that holds in the barrel. This ensures that the sights, optics, and other accessories are aligned with the bore of the barrel.
There are two different stocks made by Robinson Armament Co. – The FAST2 and FAST3. FAST Stands for Fully Adjustable Stock. Both can be adjusted for length and height and both fold. We also offer AR-15 and M4 adapters and a Picatinny rail adapter which can accept a variety of stocks and arm braces. The XCR can be configured as a rifle, carbine, or pistol.
Summary
The XCR is the only modular weapons system that combines reliability, durability, the best ergonomics, and quick-caliber changes all in one package. It is simply the best tactical rifle available anywhere at any price.
